Holiday Heart Syndrome: The effects of alcohol on your heart

alcohol and heard disease

Alcohol and the Heart – Holiday Heart Syndrome was first identified in 1978 by Dr. Philip Ettinger where he linked high alcohol consumption to atypical heart rhythms. The holidays are known for excessive alcohol and high salt intake which produces extra strain on the heart and produces toxic effects that create atrial fibrillation (abnormal heart beats). Alcohol and the heart effects – Symptoms of this condition included shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, palpitations, chest pain, and dizziness. Though this is a manageable condition, complications if left untreated include stroke and heart failure. So what can you do to avoid Holiday Heart Syndrome? Avoid binge drinking and over indulging in high salt foods this holiday season. Don’t get me wrong, enjoy all your seasonal favorites (who doesn’t love a glass of wine and some charcuterie?), just enjoy in moderation!
